UN Sustainability Goal 14: Life Below Water

Our ocean is facing unprecedented problems that need meaningful international co-operation to overcome.

As an organisation, we are internationally engaged, working with others around the world to achieve the goals set out under UN Sustainability Goal 14: Life Below Water, which underpins the work that we do.

In 2016, we took part in the European SeaChange consultation aimed at identifying barriers to ocean literacy and marine learning within the UK.

From this, we were invited to contribute to UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Ocean Literacy For All conference in Venice, Italy which was instrumental in shaping the 2021 to 2030 Decade Of Ocean Science.

We attended the OceanDotComm 2018 conference at LUMCON, USA working with other marine communicators to tell the story of the vanishing Louisiana coastline and the communities ravaged by the effects of global warming.

In 2019, we attended the High-Level Conference on Oceans – the Future of our Blue Planet at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium coming together with over 1000 ocean advocates to bring ocean conservation onto the EU agenda in a meaningful way.

Having been part of the annual conference of the European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA) from 2016 to 2018, we were proud sponsors of the 2019 conference in The Azores, Portugal. We are also on the EMSEA Board of Directors allowing us to actively contribute to the global conversation about marine education and ocean literacy, sharing best practice and learning from others.

We also are a Nominating Supporter of One Young World, helping to support and bring young people together to find solutions to the issues that humanity faces.

We have also attended Amsterdam International Water Week, Communicate, CommOcean, EU Ocean Dialogues and We Are Ocean among other international conferences.

We prioritise our attendance when invited to attend international conferences recognising the impact that excessive travel can have on our climate and ocean. Where possible, we seek sustainable, low-carbon transport and always offset our emissions via investment in green technologies and carbon-sequestration programs.
